BBC Children in Need

Aims of Fund

To positively change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.

Who can apply

Grants are given to self help groups, voluntary organisations or registered charities  working with disadvantaged children and young people aged 18 years and under, living in the UK.

How much and what can you apply for

There are now two types of grant:

  • Small grants of up to £10,000 per year
  • Main grants of over £10,000 per year

The application for process for small grants is now simpler to encourage more groups to apply for these grants.

You can apply for grants for 1-3 years.

Projects should be entirely focussed on children and demonstrate how they will change the lives of those children for the better. Areas of disadvantage include:

  • illness, distress, abuse or neglect
  • any kind of disability
  • behavioural or psychological problems
  • living in poverty or situation of deprivation

Examples of previous grants in the Brighton and Hove area:

  • Impact Initiatives WASP:  £20,928 to provide an after school and holiday club for children aged 4 to 13 in Whitehawk.
  • Fun In Action For Children: £30,000 to provide a volunteer, one to one befriending service for children aged 4 to 16.
  • PACES for Brighton: £33,415 to provide childcare places in a supportive and nurturing environment in Whitehawk
  • Safety Net: £38,773 to provide support and advice to children aged 8 to 11 who have experienced bullying.

How to apply

You will need to complete an online application. To do this you set up and account. You do not need to complete the application all in one go, and can save it and go back to it as many times as you need to.

Deadlines for application

Deadlines for both grants are: 15th January, 15th April, 15th July and 15th October each year.

You will receive the final decision within 5 months.
