Children Can Do

Aims of Fund

To help fund projects initiated by local children (aged 8 to 13 years) who have greater needs and fewer chances.

Who can apply

Applications can be made by any group of children living in Brighton and Hove, who are aged 8 to 13 years, and whose project is supported by an existing organisation, or adults who are happy to establish a community organisation. Funds are usually focused at new or small community groups with an annual income of under £25,000.

How much and what can you apply for

Children Can Do gives grants of up to £1,500 for projects which:

  • are initiated by children aged 8-13
  • benefit children who have greater needs and fewer chances
  • are run by small, local community groups with an annual income of less than £25,000
  • empower children to plan their own activities and play a central role in the funding application process
  • help children to be healthy, stay safe, be happy, have fun and do well, make positive change in their community and prepare them for their future (e.g. sports/arts projects, play schemes, fun days, summer holiday activities, out of school clubs, outings & visits)

Examples of projects suggested by children involved in developing the small grants programme are:

  • A Fun Club near home and after school that is safe and free.
  • Games to play in your local park with grown-ups to help
  • Help to keep your local area clean, safe and looking good.
  • Trips and outings to fun, special places during holidays and weekends.
  • Help to stop racism and bullying in and out of school.
  • Support for disabled children to take part in activities they choose.

Projects should be completed within a year of being funded, and Children Can Do does not repeat fund projects.

How to apply

In the first instance contact the Children Can Do Development Worker, Sue Barnes. Sue will meet with the adults or community group that is supporting the application to check that the proposed project is eligible for funding, and explain the funding requirements. She then meets with the children to complete the funding application with them.

The decisions about which groups are funded are made by children aged 8 to 13 years, from groups that have previously received funding.

Deadlines for application

You need to contact Sue Barnes at least two weeks before the deadline (see below) so she can work with you to complete the application form.

Closing date for applications: Wed 16th May 2012

Other details

Groups will need to have a constitution, bank account, committee and child safety policy, but these can all be developed with Sue's help after a funding application had been approved.

Support is also available for the committee for up to one year to help ensure that the activities funded are successful.

Funded groups are given a scrap book to keep a record of their activities. The group will also be asked to write a short report explaining how the money has helped and provide evidence of expenditure.
