Aims of Fund
The enable disadvantaged people to play a fuller role in their communities.
Who can apply
Examples of past applicants if availableRegistered charities in England and Wales with an annual income of below £1 million (for local or regional charities) or £5 million (for national charities). There is a focus on underfunded charities with reserves of 12 months or less.
How much and what can you apply for
The Community programme focuses on funding core work that helps disadvantaged people to play a fuller role in the community. They are particularly interested in work that achieves this through:
- improved social and community involvement
- improved life choices and chances
- helping people to be heard.
The programme supports:
- both existing and innovative new work
- core and project funding
- charities working across England and Wales
- applications for funding of one to three years
Although you can apply for core funding, you will need to demonstrate how the funding will benefit those who participate in your activities.
How much?
There is no minimum or maximum amount, but the amount you are awarded will be influenced by the size of your organisation. You are advised to contact your local grant officer and discuss your application with them before deciding how much to apply for.
You can apply for a one-off grant, or for funding over 2 or 3 years.
In 2009/10 the following grants were made to groups in Brighton and Hove
- £10,000 to City Gate Community Projects to support a volunteering project and FareShare
- £25,000 to The Gender Trust for core salary and operating costs
- £40,000 to SpeakOut advocacy group for people with learning disabilities
- £34,000 to Fun in Action for Children
- £30,000 to Brighton Unemployed Centre Families Project for their welfare rights service
- £4,000 to Special Task Force
- £20,000 to Extratime
- £25,000 to the Off The Fence Trust for the Antifreeze Advice Centre
- £20,000 to Tarnerland Childrens and Young People's Project
- £19,100 to Chichester Diocesan Association for family support work
- £24,000 to the Bridge Community Centre
- £24,000 to the Carer's Centre
How to apply
Complete the eligibility questionnaire on their website, then phone the regional manager. They will discuss your proposal with you then send you an application form.
You will receive confirmation, usually within one week. They may then contact you, either to discuss aspects of the application on the telephone, or to arrange to visit you.
They ask for a copy of your most recent annual report and full accounts with your completed application form, together with a copy of a recent bank statement For recently established organisations which have not yet produced a set of accounts, they ask instead for a projected cashflow and budget.
As part of the assessment process, the Trustees ask for information about your commitment to equal opportunities.
Deadlines for application
There are no formal deadlines and it takes 3 - 6 months from receipt of an application to getting a decision.
