Co-operative Community Fund
Aims of Fund
The Co-op is based on the principles and values such as self help, social responsibility and caring for others. It aims to support groups that adhere to these aims.
Who can apply
Examples of past applicants if available
The Community Fund will give grants to:
- Community, self help and voluntary groups
- Community charities (or branches of national charities)
They have a strong preference for small local groups.
Examples are:
- Assert Charity in Brighton - supports adults with aspergers syndrome and their carers.
- Phoenix Project in Worthing- provides supportive accommodation for vulnerable and homeless people aged 16 - 25 years.
You are more likely to be successful if your group has a Co-operative Bank Account, or a Co-operative Food Discount Card
The Co-operative Food Discount Card gives your group 10% off most things that you can buy in a Co-op shop. You can apply for one by phoning 0161 827 5879.
How much and what can you apply for
Examples of past grants and for what use if available
Awards usually range from between £100 to £2,000. The average award is £1,033.
New groups can apply for up to £500, and once you are able to show 3 months of accounts you can apply for more.
Your application will be scored against the following criteria:
- does it benefit the local community in an area served by a Co-operative Group business?
- does it meet a need in the local community (e.g. by improving health, the environment or community safety?)
- does it target disadvantaged groups or areas within the community?
- is it in line with co-operative values and principles?
- will it provide a benefit for a section of the community through providing equipment, adaptations, training or education?
- is it imaginative (for example, different or innovative approaches to old problems)?
To be successful a project must:
- address a community issue
- provide a good long-term benefit to the community
- support co-operative values and principles
- ideally be innovative in its approach
Applications are not normally considered for running costs, such as wages and room hire. Applications that only benefit an individual, such as scholarships and personal equipment, will not be considered.
How to apply
Applications have to be submitted Online. However, you can print off a list of questions and prepare your answers before completing the on-line form.
Deadlines for application
There are no deadlines. Applications are registered centrally in Manchester and then sent to the local co-op area committee to be assessed. You will receive a letter informing you whether your application has been successful within 4 months.
Other details
May also provide food or raffle prizes for community event - drop in and ask to speak to the manager of your local shop.
