Paediatric First Aid course - free for community groups
Training provided by: Brighton & Hove City CouncilDates: 25th February and 3rd March (Saturdays)
Overview:
This two day course and certification is dependant upon successful continuous assessment of the delegate. There is no final examination. Participants must attend both days to achieve the qualification.
Mandatory for those working with children from birth to 5 years but also suitable for those working with children up to aged 12, including foster carers, schools and CVS practitioners.
Benefits and learning outcomes to you and the organisation
- Recognise an emergency situation
- Know how to activate the Emergency Service
- Have developed and practised skills in life saving methods for babies, juniors and adults
- Have gained confidence in delivering first aid procedures
- Achieve a Certificate in Paediatric First Aid, a recognised qualification valid for three years

Brighton Junction provides fully managed office space for charities, social enterprises and voluntary and campaign groups in Brighton and is already a base for many organisations including Spurgeons, Cabrini, CVSF & The Friends Centre.As well as fully serviced workspace, the centre has a range of shared spaces for organisations to hold meetings and training sessions, plus shared kitchen facilities and outside spaces for socialising, networking and holding informal meetings.
There is currently a variety of space available – from individual desks to larger offices.

Good Food Grants - deadline 10th Feb
The deadline for the Food Partnership's annual grants programme, Good Food Grants, is fast approaching.Good food is for everyone, or it should be, and grants of up to £1000 are available to communities and schools who want to make this happen!
If you're involved in a project that wants to help people have better access to healthy food, teach people how to cook or grow food, or help people make the most of food and waste less, Good Food Grants could be for you! This flexible funding programme, managed by the Food Partnership, is currently open to applications until 10 February. Free Fuel Poverty Training - Help vulnerable clients stay well this winter
Free Fuel Poverty Training - Help vulnerable clients stay well this winterThis training (30mins - 1 hour, depending on requirements) is aimed at frontline staff and volunteers who come into contact with vulnerable residents on a regular basis. We can come and deliver the session in your team meeting, or another time at your convenience.
The session will cover:
- Understanding fuel poverty
- The impact of fuel poverty and cold housing on health
- How to recognise the warning signs of fuel poverty and cold housing
- Practical advice you can give to clients living in fuel poverty
- The support that is available to your clients How to refer clients for further help, including free financial health checks and a free winter home check
- Plus: free supplies of thermometer cards and booklets for your clients

For people who are new to voluntary and community sector finances and/or who want to keep their books using this new – computer based – simple accounts system.
This half-day session will help you to:
- Set up your bookkeeping records using this simple accounting system
- Identify which budget headings to use
- Log incomings and outgoings
- Deal with petty cash
- Reconcile your bank statements
- Create simple reports.
Please bring a calculator - no previous experience is required.
NB. Please note that this system is not suitable for groups who need to keep track of individual grants or projects. There is another system covering this – follow the link for more information or contact the Resource Centre (01273 606160 or info@resourcecentre.org.uk).
Assistance with travel and carer expenses is available for volunteers – please mention this when booking if required. Working Together Project will do their very best to meet any specific requirements that you have - please call in advance to discuss any specific needs.

Community Group Child Protection Training - 26th January 2012This is an introduction to Safeguarding & Child Protection issues for those working in small community groups.
You will gain a basic understanding of your role in establishing a safe environment and safe working practices in protecting children and young people from harm and abuse.
This course is for: Those who have contact with children or young people as part of a small community project/group.
This course will take place from 13:30 - 16:30.
Places are free to:
- Volunteers from any Brighton and Hove organisation working with children, young people and their families
- Paid workers in organisations with an annual turnover of less than £25,000
You are required to:
- Bring a letter with you from your organisation confirming your voluntary role
- Additionally in order to ensure that every participant gets the most from our training we can only book on a maximum of 4 attendees per organisation per training date.

Sport Relief Community Cash
Grants of up to £1000Deadline 16th March
The Grant shall be used to support groups addressing disadvantage and deprivation in Brighton and Hove and across Sussex where there is clear evidence of a beneficial impact on people’s lives.
Priority will be given to small, locally based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community and are undertaking actions as a means of addressing these needs.
Projects may be sport related, but it is not essential that they are.
Who Can Apply?
Voluntary and community sector including:
- constituted voluntary and community groups
- charities
- social enterprises
- co-operatives
- community interest companies
Groups need to:
- Be working in a disadvantaged or deprived area
- Be local groups with an income of less than £100,000 run by local people
- Have limited access to other sources of income
Examples of the type of activities that can be funded
- Parent and Toddler Groups
- Dad and lads group
- Equipment and material for Sport groups
- Community festivals
- Cross generational work
- Sport tournaments / competition costs
- Lunch Clubs
- Running costs for self help groups
- Committee and volunteer/staff training
- Hire of sports facilities
