B&Q One Planet Living Grant

The B&Q One Planet Living (OPL) Grant® offers between £50 and £250 of B&Q materials to schools, community groups and charitable organisations for long-term sustainable projects.

Projects must support at least one of the following themes:

• Save energy
• Conserve nature
• Grow your own
• Support local culture and heritage

Applications must be from a school, registered charitable organisation or other recognised community group, e.g. residents' association, youth centres, Scouts, Guides.

Projects can apply for funding between 1 February 2010 and 30 September 2010 and successful projects must collect their materials no later than 31 October 2010.

Community Reporters: Join the network

On 11th February a network of Community Reporters was established in Brighton and Hove. If you are interested in reporting news about your local community you can get involved, plus learn some skills at their taster sessions and forums.

Funding for good food in Brighton & Hove

The Brighton & Hove Food Partnership administers two annual small grants programmes on behalf of NHS Brighton & Hove: Good Food Grants and the Community Kitchen Equipment Grants.

Good Food Grants
This programme awards small grants to projects in schools and communities that support healthy eating and a sustainable food system for Brighton & Hove. A total of £15,000 is available for projects under this scheme. We recognise that there is great demand for funding around food work in Brighton and Hove. We would like to fund as many projects as possible; therefore the maximum grant we can award is £1,000.

Community Kitchen Equipment Grants
The Community Kitchen Equipment Small Grants programme offers £10,000 of funding to enhance community kitchens in order to support the development of cooking skills in communities in Brighton & Hove. A community kitchen is a place where community cooks, cookery leaders and school staff can teach basic cooking skills, run healthy eating sessions and run community cookery leader courses. Courses can be for adults or children. Funding must be used for refurbishments and equipment in kitchens in the community, including in schools and anywhere members of the community come together. We also encourage applications for equipment to be used for teaching cookery outdoors, e.g. at growing projects where the connections between seasonal, local food and cooking can be demonstrated. Funding of £500 to £14,000 for websites and digital media

Media Trust has opened up a range of new grants worth a total of £250,000 as part of its Community Voices project, which aims to inspire, engage and support disadvantaged and isolated communities to get their voices heard through digital media.

Communities can apply for funding, training and expertise from digital professionals alongside collaborative support at a local level.

Grants of £500, £1,500, £7,000 and £14,000.

Community Cash Awards are grants to help you set up a project that will benefit your community.

What you get

A grant to get you going of up to £5,000
Support to help plan your project, research your budget, set goals and learn about your community

Are you eligible?

You must be either:

aged 14-16, and achieving or at risk of achieving less than 5 GCSEs grades A* - C, or
aged 16-25 and not in education, training or work (or working less than 16 hours a week)

Projects must:

be run and managed by people between the ages of 14 and 25
clearly benefit the local community
benefit the people running the project; and
be a new or developing project.

What it's not for

Formal groups or organisations
Expeditions or overseas travel
Fundraising activities for charity
Trips and outings, unless they have educational value

No Messin' : funding for youth groups

Has your group got an idea? If you do, you can get money to make it happen..

It's not always easy to find somewhere safe to play or hang out. This is your youth group's chance to get something going.

It's simple. Your group identifies the problem (could be that they get bored and end up playing in dangerous places, or get pushed around by an older group) then you come up with a project that solves it!

This could include the chance to play a sport or other things to do locally. Then NO MESSIN'! could give your group the money, support and training to make it happen.

This is your group's chance to get up to £200 to turn your idea into reality, and to go on a three-day residential training course with other teams from Scotland, Wales and England. The training will help make your project a success as your group learns skills in teamwork, problem-solving and communication.

Interested? HERE'S WHAT TO DO...

1. Request your free NO MESSIN'! Planning Pack and Project Proposal Form from Sara Kirk at sara.k@ukyouth.org or 01425 675107.

2. Get your group together - anywhere between 4 and 8 of you, aged from 10-14.

3. Agree on a local problem or issue you can tackle.

4. Come up with a great idea! (It's important for your group to think about how you will involve other young people and adults in the community).

5. Return the Project Proposal Form before Friday 12th February 2010.

Remember: You can apply more than once if you have multiple good ideas.

Sport Relief Community Cash Fund: £62,500 for groups in Brighton and Hove

Grants of up to £1000 are available for community groups in Brighton and Hove from funds raised through Sport Relief.

Community Cash grants are to support work where there is clear evidence of a sustained beneficial impact on people’s lives that are excluded or disadvantaged through low income, rural or social isolation, age, disabilities, race, sexuality or gender.

Priority will be given to small, locally based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community.

Groups should have a turnover of £50,000 or less. The deadline for completed applications is 5 March 2010.

Criteria

We believe that local people know what is needed in their community and are best placed to make any changes. Having lots of activities happening in area brings vibrancy to a local community which can make it a better place to live. We are also aware that many people are undertaking great work in their area but often struggle to get the support they need. We therefore want to support community groups undertaking work that helps people of all ages feel more included in their community, builds their skills and increases their sense of achievement.

Who Can Apply?

Groups need to:

Be working in a disadvantaged or deprived area within the local authority or to other Government boundary of Brighton & Hove
Be small local groups with an income of less that £50,000 (in the last year) run by local people
Examples of the type of activities we will fund
Parent and Toddler Groups
Dad and lads group
Equipment and material for youth groups or older people’s groups
Community festivals
Cross generational work
Befriending for older isolated people
Lunch Clubs
Running costs for self help groups
Committee and volunteer/staff training
Sporting or physical activity – e.g. weekly football training sessions for a local team or gentle exercise for the elderly

How much can we apply for?

The minimum grant award is £500 and the maximum is £1,000.

Grants are restricted to one per group and therefore a group can not apply for more than one set of funding from this particular programme.

Exclusions

Grants will not be awarded to the following:

to individuals
to statutory organisations, including PCT’s and schools
groups who are not constituted
to fund trips abroad
to fund buses, mini buses or other community transport schemes (not including transport costs forming part of a project)
to fund building costs, including access adaptations to buildings

Pathfinder training for local community activists

What is it?

Take Part Pathfinder aims to encourage and support people to be active citizens. Active Citizens try to do things that have a positive effect on their communities. This can mean anything from responding to consultations and surveys to voting in local and national elections, from volunteering to becoming a local councillor, from setting up a community group to becoming a school governor.

Why should you “take part”?

Because your ideas and opinions are important! They help to shape the decisions that are made about the area where you live. Take Part Pathfinder can help you by showing the routes others have taken into an active role.

How can you “take part”?

Attend one of our discussion groups or workshops; enrol on our free Leadership course starting in January 2010 and aimed at people who want to develop the skills needed to achieve the most out of being active citizens. If you already have lots of experience or skills to share, you can volunteer for our Mentoring course where you will learn how to support others with developing as active citizens.

Plot to Plate: celebrating our sustainable city & enabling residents to learn about healthy eating, sourcing local produce & buying seasonally.

Science, nature and history: opening up the wonders of science to a wider audience with links to university experts with links to health & civic pride.

Sports, games & health: providing a wide range of sports & games to enable residents to get & remain physically & mentally fit.

Arts, culture & humanities – Widening participation in the city’s cultural offer which is also a key economic driver.

Digital technologies – harnessed throughout the project residents will be encouraged to utilise technology to enhance their learning experience & become more digitally included.

Skills swap/exchange a skill –intergenerational & intercultural learning, linking with the city’s recycling principles; creating community cohesion by sharing experiences & cultures.

International community links survey

Are you involved in a community group?

Are you in touch with a community group in a developing country?

If so the DFID Community Linking Programme (DCLP) needs to hear from you!

DCLP is an exciting new programme that offers funding and support to community groups in the UK that have a link with a community group in a developing country.

From September-December 2009 we are running a survey to find out how many community groups in the UK are already in touch with a group in another country, what activities they do in their link, and what support they'd like for their link. A link might be a charitable project with a community in a developing country, an exchange programme or visits to a particular community, or a wide-reaching community partnership, or something different.

In Brighton & Hove the ProHelp programme is managed by BCP. BCP acts as a 'broker' and matches the needs of the community organisation with a professional firm that has offered their support. Parks for People fund relaunched by Heritage Lottery Fund

Parks for People offers grants of between £250,000 and £5 million for projects involving urban or rural green spaces designed for informal recreation and enjoyment.

It has just been relaunched and new application details will be available on the website from 18th December 08.

The definition of a park for this programme is:

an existing designed urban or rural green space, the main purpose of which is for informal recreation and enjoyment.
It includes parks, gardens, squares, walks and promenades.

The priorities for selection of a park for funding are:

the community values the park as part of their heritage;
the parks meets local social, economic and environmental needs;
and the park actively involves local people.

The five outcomes for proposed project are:

Increasing the range of audiences
Conserving and improving the heritage value
Increasing the range of volunteers involved
Increasing knowledge and skills
Improving management and maintenance
